At a joint media event hosted by T-Mobile and Google yesterday morning, Andy Rubin, VP, Engineering at Google shed light over some of the rumors bubbling out since the news regarding ChromeOS, the in-progress operating system from Google broke out this week.
The rumors were mainly related to Android, an open source mobile operating system by Google, which has been under development phase since 2005 and has also powered couple of smartphones so far (T-Mobile G1 being the first one).
Rumors : As Google already have a Mobile OS called Android in place, why the heck is another OS development(ChromeOS) in progress under Google. Is Android going to be replaced with ChromeOS ? Will Android development halt after ChromeOS takes the front seat ?
In the event, it was particularly made clear that ChromeOS is an in-progress OS for Computers, laptops, Netbooks but NOT for Mobile handsets. Mobile phones Operating Systems have many complexities that a Netbook OS doesn’t need to bother about. For instance, efficient battery life and smooth call hand-off are very critical issues for Mobile Phones unlike Netbooks and laptops, which do not involve voice communication.
Andy Rubin elaborated the key differences between ChromeOS and Android saying…
“Chrome has a very Web-centric view of the world. There are different problems to be solved in different categories of consumer products. You need different technology for different solutions.”
In the same media event, both T-Mobile and Google unveiled T-Mobile’s second android based smartphone after T-Mobile G1 called MyTouch3G with Google. The new Android powered phone can be pre-ordered from now onwards but will be available for purchase only after 25 days from now.
Mytouch3G will have touchscreen keyboard unlike T-Mobile’s first android phone(G1), which had a sliding physical keyboard. It will certainly be faster, thiner and brighter. It seems that personalization(such as ‘multiple skins’ of the phone) will be exclusively offered for making it more unique compared to other smartphones.
